The Future of the Financial Planning Profession: Trends, Opportunities and Threats

with Dennis Stearns, CFP®, ChFC®

Where is the financial planning profession headed in the next 5 -10 years? How will outside forces impact the profession, for better or worse? What can planners do to better prepare for possible outcomes? How can we prepare ourselves and our families for the accelerating change? We are in the midst of one of the greatest periods of change in history. McKinsey & Co. believes the current techno-industrial revolution will be “hundreds of times, perhaps thousands of times, more impactful than the original industrial revolution.”

Dennis Stearns, CFP®, ChFC® will lead us through scenarios that address the question of where we are going, using the foundational research he did in 2019 on the future of our profession that included interviews with over 100 practitioners, leaders in our industry and thought leaders outside our profession. Some of this work was featured in the Future Firm, Future Planner cover story in the December, 2019 Journal of Financial Planning.

About Dennis Stearns, CFP®, ChFC®:

Dennis is a financial planning practitioner and President of Stearns Financial, a $1.5B RIA with offices in Chapel Hill and Greensboro, North Carolina. Dennis has been called “one of the leading scenario experts and futurists in the financial industry” by the FPA. He has frequently spoken at FPA conferences on future trends, investing, planning and intelligent aging. His most recent book is Fourth Quarter Fumbles: How Successful People Avoid Critical Mistakes Later in Life. As a result of his super trend research, he has been asked to lead or participate in future scenario exercises led by global fiduciary entities, Silicon Valley technology accelerators and other forward looking initiatives by major foundations, public and private companies. Dennis sits on several technology boards and is a partner in a technology business accelerator affiliated with a nano-technology center. He is a former chess expert and played on one of the winningest Pan-American chess teams in U.S. history.
